With an offer of getting the XR400M and the DR650 from South
Australia to Devonport Tasmania on the back of a Motor home too
good to refuse . . . we packed up and headed out for a great
couple of weeks touring one of the greatest places for adventure
riding we have in Australia.
We
had a pretty simple plan of covering the west wilderness side
with two main waypoints, Strahan for 3 nights and Hobart for 3
nights & a couple of "tent" nights in between if we got stuck
for time or simply wanted to stay put for a day or so. |

The first morning we copped some drizzle heading to Burnie and a
bit South from there, but after that morning, as luck would have
it, sunshine for the next couple of weeks :)

One interesting
section we came across was this tunnel . . . ( I suspect the
local golf course are trying to keep it a bit of a secret so we
won't name it ) originally built by the miners for a short route
out. It was very dark in their with our less than average bike
lights glowing like Volkswagon's on high beam . . . was a
bit spooky indeed :) |

For those into hot
camshafts, have a look at the down ramp on this one we found out
at Trial Harbour on the far west coast.
Gravel road out about
20km's from memory, this is one place ya wouldn't want to be on
the wors't day of winter. A small community of about a dozen
houses, well worth the ride for a look on a nice day.

( next
place west out to sea is South America ) |

If there's a must do
in Tasmania it's this World Heritage Boat Cruise based at
Strahan, not only are the views spectacular, you also get a well
informed history lesson throw in, can't speak highly enough of
this day out on the Macquarie Harbour, Hell's Gates, Sarah
Island and the Gordon River etc etc
book your seat . . .
HERE or your
local RAA like we did and save a few dollars :)
< they were so nice
they even gave us park No 1 |

Right up in the
middle of Tassie you'll find no shortage of water, the scenery up
here makes it look like your on the coast again, vast lakes and
rivers.
You
might even see the odd Wombat

Lined up for the
return home . . . these oldies in the Holden had been in Tassie
for 3 months, lucky bugga's.
Trish's bike tied up
onboard the Spirit of Tasmania, harness across the Bars, then a
loop on the Front Brake is mostly the go. They run a great set
up for Bikes, just leave it in gear and the fellas do the rest
for ya |

Some minor notes which may be helpful to others .
. .
Tassie
ain't that big but it can take up to " Double " and more of your
estimated travelling time even on bitumen roads.
It's is
wilderness in a lot of areas, depending on what your up
to....consider your communications availability with the outside
world.
If your
on a bike like Mum's with 150Km odd fuel range ( to empty ) you
will be in trouble on a few of the "excursions". Even a run out
to Strathgordon could run you dry.
Money .
. . not all places have access to the net, eftpos etc, "Real
Dollars" was the only lingo in quite a few place we wandered
into.
Anyone keen for round 2 ? ...
